Not every voice in your life is sent to guide you. Discernment is essential when choosing who to follow. A mentor is not chosen by popularity or charisma but by divine alignment. Your spirit must bear witness that God has planted that person in your path. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Let the Holy Spirit, not emotions, direct your choice.
A God-sent mentor carries fruit, not just gifts. Look at their character, integrity, and how they handle people. Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” If their life reflects humility, faith, and consistency, they are safe to follow. The wrong mentor can derail your destiny, but the right one will protect and refine it.
A true mentor will point you to Christ, not to themselves. They don’t crave control but desire your growth. John the Baptist said in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Any mentor who draws glory to themselves instead of Christ is leading from ego, not grace. Your mentor’s voice should always lead you back to God’s presence, not away from it.
Watch how they handle correction and pressure. A mentor’s maturity is seen in how they respond to challenges. Paul mentored from prison yet never lost his joy or conviction. When you see someone who remains faithful in all seasons, you’re seeing someone safe to learn from (Philippians 4:11–13). Stability in storms is proof of divine training.
Lastly, pray before committing. Even Samuel, a prophet, almost anointed the wrong king until God corrected him (1 Samuel 16:6–7). Good intentions aren’t enough—seek divine confirmation. The right mentor may not always be impressive at first glance, but they carry the voice that births your next level. Let discernment, not excitement, guide your choice.
